Story Board

For my digital story I plan on making a comic about how cell phone addiction is bad for society in todays world. As I stated in my proposal I want to make a presentation out of it using a comic and prezi. I will be using pixton for this because I believe it is the best way to express my story because I have tried pow toon and it seems difficult to produce a story on it because it is hard to illustrate characters on it, but pixton seems to be a lot easier and I will be able to make a better story based on what my initial proposal was. Basically I will embed the comic into my presentation and explain what is going on in the story and use it to help aid what I am saying in the presentation. I tried making a pow toon video on my story but it proved to be difficult to illustrate what I am trying to accomplish with my digital story. I am still on the fence about making a photo peach because the story I am trying to tell is based on cell phone addiction and not on a bunch of imaged that I can make into a video.

I also want to include this video in my prezi which really exemplifies the point I want to make about how we are all too tuned into our smartphones and not paying attention to reality.

I really want to include in my story how cell phone addiction is a real problem and how we can combat it through different ways.

So for the final part of my story I plan to
1. Present it using a prezi and the research I found bringing in facts on cell phone addiction. The goal is to give my audience a greater understanding of cell phone addiction and help them understand why too much screen time is a bad thing.
2. Include the comic I have made (or maybe a few more into the story)
3. It will be an informative presentation on modern day cell phone addiction and why it is bad for our society to have this problem.
4. The main applications used will be pixton and prezi, and I am still deciding on a photo peach or not.
5. The object of the story that I plan on doing this on is a person who is ignored because people are constantly on their phones all plugged into the internet. The story in the presentation I plan on illustrating involves the main character getting so sick of people being constantly on their phones that he eventually puts everyone into cell phone rehab (which is now a real thing, according to one of the articles that I read and put in my literature review.)

Here is a rough outline of what my comic will look like in the presentation:

Weekly Blog Post

This weeks blog post is a continuation of my digital story proposal on cell phone addiction, and an experience this week. When I went out to eat the other week at a restaurant I saw a few people at a table eating their dinner, and checking their phones every other second. There was very little actual human interaction between these people, the only interaction that was happening was most likely on social networks. Its crazy to think that people are that into their cell phones that they aren't even really interacting at a dinner in a nice restaurant which is unbelievable in my opinion. This is really why I want to do my digital story on this topic, because it really is a problem plauging society. In my house my parents would be having a fit if me or any of my siblings were spending that much time on our phones. This event really goes to show though that there actually is a legitimate problem in society with cell phones and addiction in america today. They were made to interact with people, but in a way they are themselves preventing interaction.

New Digital Story Proposal/ Annotated Bibliography

FYS Digital Story Annotated Bibliography

-In my initial proposal for my digital story I said that the topic I would like to present on was internet data safety with a combination of cell phone addiction. I have decided to just base my project solely on cell phone addiction. It is a prevalent problem in today’s society. Whether you are waiting for an appointment, or just taking the bus somewhere everyone is glued to their phones and doing nothing but checking their social media outlets or playing a game on an application. Small talk with other people is very rare if not totally extinct because of the dawn of the smartphone in society. I feel like it would be very easy to produce a digital story based off of this because I think that that the creative process behind it would be better because cell phone addiction is just something that is very common in the everyday life of the average American. The theme behind my story is going to be a person going through their average day and the people around him are always ignoring their surroundings because they are so attached to their phones. The idea behind it is going to be how society is different than it was before the age of the smart phone and how it is going downhill because of it. Even though social media is a good thing face to face interaction in my opinion is much better. People these days are lacking in basic people skills because they are always looking at a screen and thinking they have something better to do than talking with other people.

-The way I present this will once again be through the possibility of creating a comic on the different online mediums we have been introduced in class. I also want to put them into a prezi and make a presentation about my topic. I could utilize the comic by embedding it into the prezi so during the presentation I could access the comic and show it to other people.

-I plan on using all of these sources to display new information about cell phone addiction that not that many people may know, but might find interesting. By incorporating these into the story, I hope to make it more informative to the viewer.

Bibliographies
1.

Wallace, Kelly. "How to Cut Your Kids' Cell Phone Addiction." CNN. Cable News Network, n.d. Web. 17 Nov. 2013.

-The reason behind me choosing this article is that it clearly outlines the problem I described above in the introduction. Kids are always on their phones and not making time for their families at events. It describes ways that people can cut off their kids cell phone usage at family events and around the family overall. It is a good start for getting them off their phones and interacting with people. The only downfall for this is that it only applies to kids who live with their parents.

-This article from men’s health outlines how one can tell they are addicted to their cell phone. I think it would be a good starting point in a presentation to point out the symptoms and see if anyone has any of these

3.

Spiegel, Jeremy, MD. "Hanging Up on Cell Phone Addiction." Psychologytoday.com. Psychology Today, n.d. Web. 17 Nov. 2013.

-This article is more relevant to people in college/ adults about cell phone addiction. It gives some ways to break the cell phones hold on us and discusses the problems of always staring at a screen. It would ad the value of really identifying what’s going on with the cell phone problem and possible solutions for older people and not just children.

Ablow, Keith, Dr. "Why Cellphone Addiction Is Now on the Rehab Menu." Fox News. FOX News Network, n.d. Web. 18 Nov. 2013.

-This article discusses how there actually are rehab centers for smartphone/ mobile device addiction. There is actually a scientific term for cell phone addiction, which is nomophobia. Which is the anxiety caused by being away from these devices. This article is helpful because it brings in an extreme solution to cell phone addiction that does exist and is a viable option for people who have a real problem with their devices.

Digital Story Proposal

Proposal- Writing it on internet safety and facebook and what you post on websites like it. How posting certain things on social media can be bad and how it can carry into real life. Particularly in the world of sports, and in real life.

-Another topic I want to include is cell phone/ internet addiction. All you see during the day is people staring at their phones instead of actually interacting with people. It is a problem that is all over the place and needs to be addressed in some way.
·      It will be easiest to include this in the story because I can use pixton to illustrate this by people just staring into their smart phones and not interacting socially.

-This relates to our discussions on internet safety and what we put online. There are things that people put online that they regret or that someone can use against them. The safety of what we put on the internet is the main issue that the project is based around.

-I want to possibly blog about the story and maybe use pixton to create a digital artwork out of the project. I want to create a narrative out of it and possibly use two mediums to express this with pictures and words.

-We used pixton in class to already create a story so I am someone acquainted with how to use it. I will just be using the characters given to me by the web site to create the story.

Individual Part of Digital Media Project

Our event is a series of events which are around the Edward Snowden NSA leaks about the NSA spying on the online activities of people in the United States. The main point about our project is around the idea should we keep our privacy or should we give it up for safety. This revolves around the idea of digital media and social justice because it is our privacy that is being invaded and it isn’t a thing that most people in America want. Most people think that what happens on a persons people computer is totally private and only for their eyes. More recently, there is the issue of the NSA tapping Google and Yahoo databases, and the overseas fiber lines. All of these leaks have come as startling news to people and come back to the ideas of social justice and digital media, which is the protection of our privacy and rights online.

There are two articles I have found revolving around the NSA.

http://www.latimes.com/world/la-fg-spying-phones-20131029,0,3235295.story#axzz2j4iPs543 - This article is from the LA Times about how the US is spying on its allies by collecting data of online activity in other countries outside the US.

This creates a debate on is less privacy good for more safety or is it the other way around

Blog Post

This weeks post continues on the N.S.A. and all of the digital surveillance. This time the controversy is over the NSA and the surveillance of data overseas. This is according to the documents leaked by Snowden that the government is able to look at things over google fiber and yahoo's browsers from overseas. This is possible if the wires that go through the ocean are tapped and are accessed from an outside source. The fact that the government is able to do this is strange because it isnt just dealing with what is a domestic thing. This is just happening outside of the borders of the United States which is crazy because the government is dealing with data that isnt even inside the United States. Personally I dont believe that this data should not be collected because it is not on domestic soil and is outside the country, where we shouldnt even be monitoring the data. I believe if there is any data collecting it shouldnt be outside of our country. This goes back to the idea though that there should not be any spying on the personal data of a person, because we are entitled to our privacy.

Social Action project Introduction Part 2

The way that I want to go about my social action project is to use guerrilla art. There are a lot of different ways of using it, like sidewalk chalk, posters or even the balloon idea which seems pretty cool to me. I kind of want to involve social media in the project because I believe if we get a famous person to tweet about it or retweet the tweet it could really spread because they have tens of thousands of followers. This was done last year with the Kony 2012 campaign which literally caught fire with how popular it got in the united states because of twitter and facebook. That is why I want social media to be involved because it could really get the word out about what we want to spread around and the cause. The main challenge would be combing guerrilla art with social media because we really have to find a hybrid to make these two really mix together and get our ideas out.

Social Action Project Intoduction

Part 1.) There are numerous different ideas for using social media to promote justice. These causes could be domestic violence, internet privacy, and e waste.

-Domestic violence has been going on for as long as time itself. It is a terrible tragedy that has plagued society for too long. Domestic violence can take many forms including physical, sexual and emotional abuse in the house. It is a terrible thing that needs to be stopped in our society because it is a terrible thing that goes on.

-Internet Privacy has become a subject thats become an issue in the 2000s. It is such a big problem because almost everyone in America today has some sort of social network medium, whether it is facebook, twitter, instagram, or even myspace. The issue that comes up with it is that there is an issue of abusing someones information whether it is credit card information, personal information, or photographs. Most people do not want this information being shared or abused, but it still happens anyway despite what they try do about it.

-The e waste issue is a more recent one that revolves around the idea of "what happens to our electronics after we get rid of them?"Most of these parts are sent to recycling centers or shipped to Africa and being disassembled in harmful ways. They are not being disposed of properly and it is hurting the environment and all those recycling the parts.

Discussion questions
1. What do you think about all of this toxic e waste being a problem back home in the US?
2. Do you think we have the right to know everything a company does with its waste?
3. If companies could decide if we have the right to know whats harmful, how do they judge whats harmful?

Friday, October 4, 2013

I have decided to revisit the topic of e waste in this weeks blog. This isn't about the how or why around e waste, its about the solutions. In my last blog I visited some solutions, so I decided to find some more for the long term fixing of the e waste problem. One of the options in the article was to donate used electronics to Goodwill because there is always someone in need of electronics somewhere in the united states who cant afford them. Because these items are being donated they are being re-used and they are not being shipped off to Africa to be processed. There are also services that can fix our broken electronics so that we do not have to throw them all away and are not being wasteful. We can also re purpose the parts and sell them to computer stores where the old parts can be taken out and put into new things so that when the old computers are thrown away we are not being wasteful. These are a bunch of different ways to get rid of the e waste problem and definitely help reduce the problem in third world countries.

Pixton Cartoon Project

http://www.pixton.com/embed/k8omr4uz
The article that I have chosen to write about this week was about e-waste and the disposal of our old electronics after we are done with them and kick them to the curb. Most of the waste we get rid of is put in dumps in third world countries. Some of these parts are very toxic for the environment and are ruining it in these countries. The solution to the problems over there come back to here and what we do with our electronics. One of the solutions offered up in the article said that paying a little bit more for electronics and then returning them to the manufacturer for a small buyback amount. One thing that I have seen on tv is advertisements for companies that buy your old smart phones, which is a really good start for solving the e-waste problem. Donating old computers to those without computers could also be a good solution. There definitely need to be more regulations on companies who dispose of e-waste because only 11-14 percent of all the waste gets sent to recyclers. A possible solution could be a tax break for companies that dispose of the waste properly or something along those lines. There a re a number of solutions that could be discussed but those are just a few.

Are we really protected?

The article that I have chosen to read about talks in a lot of detail about internet safety. It talked about how Snowden leaked all the information about the NSA, but even more about our safety as people on the internet. Im a person who has nothing to hide when it comes to the internet, but the fact that our personal information and such is available to be hacked and looked at is not a thought i like to bring to mind. Especially my online accounts where I have money on such as iTunes or Amazon where i really dont want people knowing my information. It is crazy to think that all of our personal information is at risk that easily and anyone who has a government clearance can look at it. This goes along with being careful with what you put on facebook, twitter, or even instagram when it comes to sharing information. This goes to show that you cant be too careful with what you post online. I personally stay away from posting too much on social media because the less that is on there the less I have to worry about. But that doesnt go for all other forms of web browsing because there is always some sort of information being  collected on what you do when you surf the web.

Here is the article this post is based off of in case you want to read: http://www.abc2news.com/dpp/news/state/johns-hopkins-researchers-discuss-nsa-snowden-leak-effects-on-cyber-security

Digital Media and Social Justice- Is there still really privacy?

The article that I have chosen to reflect upon was written by Ken Dilanian of the LA Times and is about the Snowden's latest leak about the NSA. In the latest leak according to the article, Snowden said that the NSA was giving Israel the rights to look at the digital information of private citizens of the United States and hold it for up to a year. Meaning that the Israeli government can hold information on any random person who is not in the government for an extended period of time. Just think that your information on Facebook at this moment could be stored in another countries data base. This goes hand in hand with the issue of digital media and social justice because some people might view our private information being shared with other people as wrong. Most people would not be comfortable with this idea because it is their private information being shared with other people. The fact that we are just finding this information out is crazy. It goes back to the idea of personal privacy and if we are willing to give that up for security. Is there a justifiable claim for the government to give our personal information to a foreign power? How do you feel about personal information of US citizens being shared with other countries?

9. Write down a question or two that you would like to ask me about myself or the class.

-What is your favorite genre of music, and artists in that genre?

-If you had the choice to be any character from television who would you be and why?

Technology

6. What do you believe was the most important technological invention in history? Why?
-In my opinion the most important technological invention in history is the computer because it allowed for the rapid advancement of all technology in todays age. It allows us to have vast amounts of information at our fingertips. This invention also comes with controversy because the issue of privacy on the internet. It is a very debated topic in today's world because people are very concerned over the security of their search privacy on the internet and their various day to day activities. Even though the computer does come with some controversy it is still a very important invention.

7. Please list a number of technologies you currently believe to be essential to your life.
-Technologies that are currently essential to my life are the automobile, the computer, the internet, and my cellular phone because they all get a lot of use in my daily life and are essential in today's world for communication and travel.

8. Briefly describe your experience working with 1. computers, 2. digital media, and 3. social media and then rate your technical proficiency on a scale of 10 (I invented Facebook) to 1 (what are you talking about).
-My experience regarding computers varies greatly. I am proficient in using a pc, but am currently using a mac. I also have an iPad that I am very experienced with because I used to use it for school
-I am very familiar with the mainstream sources of social media. I have a twitter, Facebook, instagram, and a google plus (Even though I haven't posted since junior year of high school.)
-On a scale of 1-10 regarding technology proficiency I would give myself a 5, I have some idea what I am talking about regarding technology but there is always room for improvement.

Learning Style

My Learning Style: I am more of an interactive learner meaning that I learn by doing things firsthand. I would rather do things in the classroom than just sit there and listen. Most of the class has to be hands on for me to be really creative.
